もどす【戻す】

1 〔返す〕 return; give back; (持ってきて) bring back; 〔送り返す〕 send back; (落とし主へ) restore; 〔乾燥させたものを〕 rehydrate.

●元の位置へ戻す put sth back in its place [where it was]

・本を本棚に戻す return [restore] a book to (its place on) the shelf; replace a book on the shelf

・干ししいたけを水で戻す soak [reconstitute, rehydrate] dried shiitake mushrooms in water

・白紙に戻す ⇒はくし 4¹

・話を元に戻す return [go back] to the subject.

●掃除機を元のところへ戻しておいてください. Put the cleaner back in its place.

2 〔逆方向へ進める〕 put [turn] back.

●時計を 20 分戻す put [turn] back (the hands of) a clock (by) 20 minutes.

・〔裁判を〕 一審に戻す send back [remand] the case to the court of first instance.

3 〔吐く〕 throw [bring, fetch] up 《food》; vomit; puke.

●戻しそうになる feel nauseous; feel sick; feel like vomiting [throwing up]; retch.

●船酔いして戻しそうになった. I became seasick and almost vomited.

・病人は物を食べるとすぐ戻した. The patient could not keep anything [any food] down.
